Planer is a machine you use to trim the surface of timber with a consistent thickness. But the machine can be troublesome sometimes. One of the common problems lots of people face is, that the machine won’t pull the timber.
f you’re new to this woodworking industry, this issue can give you a headache. So, why is the planer not pulling wood through?
Well, dirty and filled with debris beds can cause pulling issues. In addition, resin built up on the rollers can also affect your usual pace. In both cases, you have to clean the planer tools thoroughly. Moreover, uneven board and wrong height of planer can also cause difficulty.
So, this is only a gist of the upcoming segments. Follow our lead until the conclusion for further information.
Don’t want you to wait anymore. Let’s jump into the details!
3 Reasons Behind Planer Not Pulling Wood Through
Planer is an important element of the woodworking industry. But, what is a planer used for? A planer is basically a trimmer that planes the surface of timber with a consistent thickness. It helps to create a smooth surface throughout the board’s length.
Some of you might be thinking, is planing wood necessary? Well, yes it is. Jointers and planers are mainly applied to build furniture and other structures to correct dimensions. You can also use a hand planer if your planer machine is having any issues.
However, many of our clients often face a common problem with their planers. The complication is nothing but planers not pulling wood through. Well, there are a few reasons behind the issue just as Dewalt string trimmer problems.
But don’t worry, it’s no big deal. If you’re a woodworking specialist, you can sort it out all by yourself. Even though you will need some guidance, right?
Here we are undertaking that part! We will be showing all the possible paths to resolve the issue all on your own.
Reason 1: The Bed is Dirty
The first probable reason behind the planer not pulling wood is the bed is dirty. People often make this mistake. A bed full of dirt and wooden debris can cause this complication frequently.
When you’re placing timber on an uncleaned bed, it will create snipe on the board. Moreover, if the height is increased due to dirt, it’ll eventually affect the board from getting through. Further, resin build-up may also cause difficulty.
So, you must keep the bed clean!
For cleaning the debris and resin from the planer bed, grab a clean cotton piece of cloth first. Wipe off the bed and extensions entirely to remove dirt. If your wood planer has resin built-up on it, you can use a naphtha solution too.
Naphtha is a petroleum solvent, commonly used as a cleaning agent. You have to pour the liquid on the bed and scrape the surface with the wiper. After cleansing, check out the planer if it’s working or not.
Here, we’re sharing a bunch of naphtha brands’ names. This list might help you to get the right one for you.
You can choose either of these solutions as they both work effectively on planer beds.
Reason 1: Rollers are Dirty
If the Dewalt planer is not pulling wood through, then the problem is in the rollers. One of the key reasons behind wood getting stuck is resin and dust build-up. This creates a barrier and the roller can’t grip the workpiece like before.
Cleansing the rollers with a proper liquid is still a mystery. Yes, you heard it right!
We have valid evidence behind this theory. The rollers are made of rubbers. Certain harsh chemicals and solvents are harsh to rubbers.
Manufacturers have warned about it in the manual. But no one provided any workable solution to it. We have seen endless debates on this topic.
Hence, we named this issue a mystery.
Anyways, we suggest not using any harsh chemicals on your rubber planer tools. Gasoline, bleach, ammonia, or any other harmful fumes can damage the rubber.
Rather, you can clean them with solvents like naphtha or a mild blade cleaner. Just pour or spray a little amount of these liquids and wipe off the resin layer. This method also gives you a proper solution to why wood is getting stuck in my planer.[Note: Don’t forget to turn off the main of the planer machine. Or else you might lose your hand!]
Another effective way is to wash the rollers with soap. For that, you have to take off the rollers first. Then rub them with soap and water. This is a worthwhile method when the rollers are way too dirty to use.
You can also use these methods to troubleshoot your Delta 22 560 planer.
Reason 3: Cutter Height isn’t Matching The Wood Width
Well, sometimes even professionals face this problem. They can’t meet the correct width level and it causes pulling complications.
We have seen many woodworkers asking, why is my Dw735 not feeding?
There are plenty of reasons behind the problem. Woodworkers often use glue to attach multiple timbers together. Those edged glues hamper the machine to pull the timber. Further, the rough surfaces also create the same problem. Then again, an uneven board can hamper your wood planer.
To resolve the issue, you must go through the board problems first. If the board has edged glue, scrape them off. If it has a rough surface, sand it.
Finally, if the timber has an uneven board, surface them with a jointer. Because a work board with two parallel surfaces can’t clean effectively.
Thereafter, the planer troubleshooting part is way easier. First, place the workboard and give them a little push. If the planer pulls it through the machine, your problem is solved.
But if that doesn’t work, take out the board. Now lower the table to get the board back. You need to get the table to the correct height. The further step is planer feed roller adjustment. For that, raise the table rollers and place the board on the bed once again.
Push it through the electric planer and your problem will be solved.
But, if you’re still unable to resolve the difficulty, don’t hesitate to call the professional. They can guide you with their experience.
What is a planer snipe?
Snipe is caused when a board gets cut deeper at the beginning or end while planing. If one edge of the wood is lifted up while planing, it causes a snipe. Generally, it happens when the backside of the wood board has some twists and cupping. This increases the number of snipes. So, properly mill the surface before planing the board.
Why does my Dewalt planer keep shutting off?
There could be multiple reasons why your Dewalt planer keeps shutting off. Check the bushings, bearings, and gears if they are tightened or dried up. Further, lack of power can be a valid reason as well. It may happen due to too short or long extension cord. Also, a damaged over-current switch may cause a power outage.
How much can a planer take off at a time?
A planer can usually remove a maximum of 3 mm per pass. To get better performance, you should measure the width of the lumber before planing. When thin lumber is being planed, the maximum amount is removed. But when you put lumber with maximum width, it causes overheat and the cutter to stall.
What is skipped?
Skipping is a process to remove the high points of timber through a planing machine. It gives a smooth and plain surface on wood boards. If you skip over low points, it will create contrast. Skipping is counted as an important part of woodworking.
For the time being, let’s go our own ways. I hope this has cleared up any confusion about the planer not pulling wood through.
